MENTOR STORIES AND TESTIMONIALS

What Our Mentors Have to Say:

Mary
“I decided to become a mentor when my own children went to college, I enjoy teenagers. The relationship with my mentee is a work in progress. It takes a while to get to know people and it’s important for a mentor to understand that you don’t come in right away and make a difference, it’s gradual, you build trust. We talk about life and school; I believe I’m another ear for my student. She knows there’s another person out there who looks at things with a different perspective, and someone who is encouraging her and lets her know that she can do this, nothing is an impossibility. She’s a very strong person and student, I’ve certainly learned that irregardless of different upbringings, backgrounds or socioeconomic status, teenagers are basically the same. My advice to anyone who is considering becoming a mentor with CCF, is IT’S WORTH IT!!!

-Mary has been a one-to-one mentor to a student in the Coatesville School District.

Mike
I became a mentor because I’ve had mentors throughout my life. I’ve had several mentors in my life, starting with my sixth grade teacher, and I felt that I should give back what had been given to me. Being a mentor has given me a greater understanding of what kids today are going through and has also taught me that encouragement from one person can make a big difference in someone’s life. My proudest moment will occur when my student graduates and moves on to post-secondary education this May. I think my student has learned to be more open with people and how to have a greater belief in himself. The benefits of mentoring far outweigh the time commitment involved. Think about all that you’ve been given and realize that there are people who do not have nearly the support and encouragement that you’ve been given. It is time for you to give back…to whom much is given, from whom much is required.

-Mike has been a mentor to a student in the Kennett School District.
