CC Futures Students Participate in the Coatesville
Youth Survey Project
January
2005
As part of United Way of Chester County’s Dr. Martin
Luther King Community Service Project, a small group of teens were
selected to participate in a series of workshops designed to promote
youth leadership development in a service learning capacity. Eight
Chester County Future students participated in this initiative,
Simone Boyd, Brandyn Taylor, Precious Manneh, Shalia Shelton, Patrice
Trammell, Keya Stanford, Brandi Ryan and Kerri Wilson.
The purpose of this project was to discuss ways to improve the
quality of life for youth in the City of Coatesville. Three leadership
and skills development workshops were conducted. The first workshop
centered on “Understanding a Community Survey and the Value
of Peer Input.” The team of 15 students conducted surveys
of their peers to learn how Coatesville youth feel about their
city and the environment which supports them. Questions dealt
with issues related to education, recreation, family relationships,
and community. A total of 163 surveys were completed. The second
workshop focused on “Understanding the Survey Results.” The
students had the opportunity to discover the meaning behind the
surveys conducted. The third and final workshop dealt with “Articulating
their Vision for the City of Coatesville” enabling the
students to craft a vision statement based on the information
gathered. Following this final workshop a celebration was held
to recognize their accomplishments.
